Microsoft Unveils Copilot 3D – Instantly Turn Photos into 3D Models

Good news for designers, engineers, and creative artists—Microsoft has introduced Copilot 3D, an AI-powered tool that can turn simple 2D images into detailed 3D models in just a few seconds. The launch comes at a time when Microsoft is rapidly expanding its AI toolkit and just a day ago, it announced that GPT-5 Smart Mode is coming to Copilot.

Part of Copilot Labs’ “Precision” division, Copilot 3D aims to make 3D creation fast, easy, and hassle-free. Currently, the feature is free for select users who sign in with a Microsoft or Google account. The tool is specifically designed for rapid prototyping, concept testing, and educational use—areas where traditional 3D software takes a lot of time and effort.

How it works?

The process is pretty simple—users upload a PNG or JPG image (smaller than 10MB), hit the Create button, and within a few seconds or a minute, the AI creates a 3D version of it. The finished model is available in GLB format, which works seamlessly with most 3D viewers, editing tools, and game engines.

The Verge’s initial tests found that the tool produced good results on simple objects like a chair, mug, or banana, but struggled a bit with broken objects or irregular shapes. However, the output was clean enough to be inserted directly into AR apps or game projects.

How to try it

To use Copilot 3D, open Copilot.com in a desktop browser, open the sidebar menu at the top left, click Labs, and select “Try it now” under Copilot 3D. The models you create will be saved in the “My Creations” section for 28 days, where they can be downloaded, edited, or reused.

Important precautions

Microsoft recommends uploading images with a clear contrast between the subject and the background. Currently, only PNG and JPG are supported, but format and file size limits may increase in the future.

Use only images you have the rights to—uploading photos of people or any type of prohibited content is strictly prohibited. The company warns that inappropriate content will be automatically blocked and accounts may be suspended if necessary.

Most importantly—Microsoft has made it clear that 3D models created by users will not be used to train its AI systems, which may come as a relief to users concerned about privacy.
